ARASARU OF EDITING IS SURESH URS!

King of editing of films is Suresh Urs. The three decades of stint in editing film working multi languages with tops in Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam etc Suresh Urs firmly believes that it is only the subject and director perception counts in the first stage of success of a film.

Suresh Urs (younger brother of Sundarakrishna Urs, powerful actor of yesteryears) has to his credit 560 films and eight of his assistants and half a dozen in Tamil are independent editors today.

Suresh Urs is reaching the stage of father in law as his first son working with him Raghav S Urs is getting married to Deepti on November 4, 2012 in Mysore, home town of Suresh Urs, National acclaimed editor. Suresh Urs younger son is Gautam S Urs is studying MBA.

Edited and kept portion in the mind of Suresh Urs was related to ‘Parole’ Kannada cinema which according to title card etc – he is the producer. No I was not the producer of ‘Parole’. Director Shekar is the producer of the film. The fate of the film I came to know second day of the shooting. He wanted to use my name. I don’t have anything against to him. It is a past issue. I did not take part in much of the activities. For ‘Parole’ audio event also I was late mentioned Suresh Urs. However, bound script prepared for ‘Parole’ was not touched.

We need directors like Puttannaji and K Balachander says Suresh Urs. When he remembers KB, the professional clash he had for 5000 feet of shots in ‘Kalki’ never goes away from his memory. For the 5000 footage Suresh Urs suggested for one post interval shot would explain this 5000 feet length of the film. That irritated KB in the beginning. But after lunch KB came and hugged him complimenting his ability in editing. Suresh Urs was in tears when he was scolded by KB at the time of ‘Kalki’. That was a memorable incident of my life he says speaking to a few journalists at the dining hall of Sri Harsha Mahal on the occasion of 100 days of ‘Bhagirathi’.

Suresh Urs other observations are as follows:

·         I come for work for whoever calls me.
·         I don’t like hasty makings without plans.
·         Today it is ‘Hero’ based industry. Not director based cinemas.
·         There are some producers who ask why editing is required. They do not know about this profession.
·         The beginning energy misses out in many.
·         I have been going to colleges in Chennai go give lecture.
·         My assistants like Kemparaj, Shiva, Harsha, Nagendra Urs, Gnanesh, Chandru MN Swamy in Karnataka, two Ganesh’s, Saravana, Viji and other in Tamil films are doing fine.
·         I feel the necessity of a book on producers. It should explain his responsibilities.
·         Even to this day I adopt new things and eager to learn.
·         Digital cinema making reduces the stress. There is no body pain. 100 days shot cinema could be done away in 25 days.
·         Digital has not given good results. I don’t recommend. Instead of it they could do it in super 16mm. The cost cutting is also possible. For 30000 rupees in digital per day where as regular is happening in 25000 rupees. Why no one understand it?
·         Digital or any technology is used wrongly. It is used for gimmicks.
·         When I saw Mungaru Male in PVR I clapped spontaneously.
·         Recently I saw ‘Sundara Pandian’ Tamil cinema. Its editing is so fine. I congratulated the editor Bosco.
·         According to me editor should be with the team from ‘Omkara’ day for the film. Finally he is brining the film to a shape. He can give useful decisions that help in reduction of cost of production.
·         When Cheran started ‘My Autograph’ – he invited editor, cameraman and art director. Art director 15 times objected to various things. Finally all three of us returned the advance to Cheran. He asked us to keep it and assured to tell another story in a week. He came after four months. That’s ‘My Autograph’ worked out.
·         A good editor of a film could be a bad director too.
·         When we work with giants like Manirathnam it is easy. They know what we are telling and why we are talking.
·         Puttannaji I believe used to study the psychology of light boys on the sets for the shots.
·         I don’t have superiority or inferiority complex.
·         I am working as of now for Neer Dosai of Vijayaprasad, Chandra bilingual of Roopa Iyer and others.
·         A few times I got tempted to become a director. I still find it is a toughest ringmaster job.
